Mission Statement
The mission of the Garden at Elawa Farm is to complete and preserve the interpretive restoration of the original garden, commissioned by A. Watson Armour, circa 1918. The 2.2 acre garden will resemble the original garden in design as closely as practical, re-establishing the allee, the hedges, the cutting gardens, fruit tree stands and vegetable beds in similar configurations.
The Garden at Elawa Farm will be an organic community garden with a master plan, maintained by volunteers who will select, plant and harvest the annual crops to be grown each season. It is to be open to the public for viewing and available to the community for educational purposes. Produce harvested from the garden and foodstuffs made thereof will be available to the community for sale at a Garden Market and the proceeds will be used to support garden operations.
In addition, the Garden will have a kitchen at the farm where products such as soups, pestos, jams and breads will be made with garden produce. The kitchen will be supervised by a certified chef who will direct qualified volunteers in the daily tasks at hand. The kitchen will also host workshops throughout the season to promote the culinary education involved with fresh, locally grown food.
The Elawa Farm Garden will be overseen by a Board of Stewards which will provide appropriate means of oversight for garden operations to insure the fulfillment of the mission. Regular reviews of Garden activity will be reported to the Elawa Farm Foundation and to the City of Lake Forest, the owner of Elawa Farm.
