Garden Market Opening

Tuesday, June 23

10-4 pm

We will be open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10-4 pm until Halloween.  Seasonal crops will be supplemented from the kitchen with soups, jams, pestos, breads and muffins.  Please visit our market, kitchen and garden when you come to shop, it's a lovely trip worthy of time spent in a most beautiful place.

Wild Onion Book Series

The Revolution will not be microwaved by Sandor Ellix Katz

As part of its celebration of 2009 as YEAR OF LOCALLY GROWN, Friends of Ryerson Woods (FRW) is offering the four-part Wild Onion Book Series reading books with important messages on the locally grown theme. This book tells the story of the consumer revolution against globally industrialized agriculture and corporate domination of food production,processing and distribution systems. Katz introduces readers to people who are reclaiming the right eat healthy, wholesome food.

If you wish to reclaim a connection to the food you eat, join this discussion led by Linda Bubon of Women & Children First.  We'll meet at Elawa Farm in Lake Forest to learn about the restoration of Elawa's historic gardens into an organic public garden.

Garden Conservancy Open Day

Sunday, July 26

10-4 pm

The garden will be on the Open Days tour for a second year as a "work in progress", joining Camp Rosemary, Mettawa Manor and the Deyoung residence in Lake Bluff as a decidedly different property.  Visitors can view photographs of the original garden and the restoration process that was undertaken in 2003. The kitchen and the garden market will also be open to complete the scope of the Garden at Elawa Farm. Enjoy the day and support the Garden Conservancy!

Kitchen Workshops

June 13, 1-3 pm * Summertime Training

For volunteers intending to work in the kitchen or the Garden Market, this is a review of sanitation practices required in our kitchen, taught by Sarah Gold of the Lake County Health Department. No charge, just come and learn the ropes.

August 22, 2-4 pm * Sling the Zing

Barbara McCormack will be plucking peppers, tomatoes and herbs from the garden and pairing them with surprising spices. Ever had chili roasted corn on the cob with queso fresco? Her Southwestern style will also take a stand with gazpacho, tortilla soup and chili rellenos. Get your taste buds ready and bring a kerchief because this will be hot and spicey, y’all.! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$45

September 12, 2-4 pm *  Spiaggia Summer Harvest

Chefs Sarah Gruenberg of Spiaggia (Presidet Obama’s FAVORITE restaurant) and Meg Colleran of the Art Institute will team up to bring us delectables from the fall garden. October 17, 2-4 pm * Holiday Chocolates

With Elawa Farm chef Sarah Bellini. Milk, white, dark, bark, sprinkle, wrinkle, stir and hark! This is as much fun in its preparations as the tasting of its sumptuous creations. The challenge will be to get home with the bounty, to share and show off across the county................................................................$50


CULINARY KIDS WORKSHOPS

Growing Gourmets Series Presented by Kendall College trained and certified Personal Chef Sharon Scott, chef/owner of “Prairie Girl Kitchen”, personal chef service.

August 8, 2-4 pm    Lil’ Sprouts in Kitchen Workshop 

Show your Lil' Sprout how to prepare healthful, kid friendly snacks with vegetables from The Garden at Elawa Farm and locally sourced organic farms. Items to be prepared will be yummy hummus and veggies, berry smoothies, tomato soup, and pesto toast made with Elawa Farm Chef Sarah’s homemade bread. Guaranteed healthful snackin' fun! August 15, 2-4 pm   Farm to Table Kids Pizza Workshop

From the garden to the oven, your budding food enthusiast will learn how to make pizza.  Kids will learn the art of selecting fresh ingredients from the Garden at Elawa Farm.  Kids will have an opportunity for a hands-on learning experience using age appropriate utensils and then dine on their pizza creations.  Limit 6 ( ages 5-11)...........................................................................$40

Christmas Market

December 4-6, 2009

10-4 pm

Trees, wreaths, roping and greens will fill the outdoor courtyard at the farm while inside the barn we will have amaryllis and paperwhites, hand made bows, gingerbread houses and holiday foodstuffs made from garden produce.  Additionally, we will be making decorative outdoor arrangements in pots to grace your front entrance or back terrace.  Proceeds from the Christmas Market will go to the restoration of the garden at Elawa Farm.
